Major Patrick McAfee
US Army Dallas-Ft Worth Personnel Assistance Point
Major McAfee has close to 21 years service in the Army. We met Major McAfee when we arrived in Dallas to board a plane to Kuwait with the soldiers deploying or returning from an R&R. We watched as USO volunteers and other volunteers from the Dallas Community gave a welcome send off to our troops. Major McAfee took us to the different USO centers in the terminal including a Reading Room where military personnel can video tape themselves reading stories to their children. FedEx delivers them to the families.
We saw the USO Lounge for military personnel only. They can relax their until their plane departure time. They can watch TV, make phone calls, use the computer to get online and eat.
We saw USO volunteers approach troops as they were waiting the terminal and thank them plus offer them drinks and dessert items.
We were told that we might be able to film the welcome home celebration that takes place every day in Dallas as the troops come home. That is what we did when we arrived back in Dallas after completing our third trip to Iraq.
It began with the Fire Department having two fire trucks waiting for the plane. Their water hose shot water from either side of the plane over the plane after it landed. The Pilot of the plane explained over the intercom why they do this every day.
Major McAfee met us at the door. We were able to get set up right away as the troops de planed. There were some USO volunteers, Dallas citizen volunteers waiting to cheer them on and the two “kissing grandmas” that we met weeks before.
We then went to the main terminal area that has posters all over the walls welcoming home our troops. There were over 100 citizens and USO volunteers lined up to cheer them on and welcome them. There were family members, children, boy scouts, veterans and more. It was an incredible experience. Those listening on the internet will hear all that happened.

Bert Brady
We had heard about Bert months before. He is one of the main daily organizers of the Dallas Welcome Home Events. He has received a Ft Hood Hero Award, and The Freedom Award at Provo, Utah.
Bert talks about what Dallas does every day to welcome home troops. Some days like the day we arrived there are two flights. Some of those flights have over 300 local people out to welcome the troops.
Bert narrated for us for a while and we also had comments from many of the participants including children. We were able to talk briefly with Kelly who was waiting for her fiancée. We were then later able to hear from both of them united. We also talked with a soldier who was holding for the first time his New Born Baby with his wife standing next to him.
“This is a heck of a way to start your day” said Bert Brady. “Somebody has to be out here to greet the troops” said Frenchy Rio a Vietnam Veteran. Another organizer said she served in the military for 18 years and is now out at DFW everyday to welcome our troops.

Two Volunteers with singing Teddy Bears
One of the Volunteers is a Gold Star Mom
We spotted two volunteers holding two singing Teddy Bears. They started the song as we came over with the camera. All will hear as Lee Greenwood sings his hit song “God Bless the USA”.
One of the volunteers is a Gold Star Mom. She talks about losing her son CPL Nathaniel Aaron Garry October 22, 2006. He was a medic who was killed by a sniper while they were at a Market.
CPL Garry was with the Airborne.. 4th ID in Baghdad.
She is now part of the USO in Dallas and participates in the Welcome Home events.
She asks everybody to “pray for our military, pray for their families, and pray for our leaders”. She says “they have such a touch job” – “that’s my mission”.
